Advice on Vacation Food Temptation?

I'm wondering if any of you have gone on a cruise or to an all-inclusive resort while on your weight loss journey. This winter I have such an experience on the way and I need help so that it goes well.

Why am I going on such a potentially gluttonous vacation instead of to...I don't know, a dude ranch? Well, it's called compromise, my friends. My wife/MIL/SIL get a large family vacation in paradise and I get...a 24-hour dessert buffet? Therein lies the challenge.

Anyway, please leave your best tips in the comments.

Weekly Recap

9 Fruits and Vegetables per day - Grade: B-. I did OK, mostly in the five to six range. Compared to pre-P.O.P. levels, this is great. When I have good fruit and vegetable options, I do great. But I haven't gotten good at creating opportunities to eat fruits and vegetables yet.

9 Sweets or Snacks per week - Grade: C. Very inconsistent on this one. When I'm tired, I start snacking late in the day. I must figure this out. If not, I might find myself using Lisa's A is for Abstinence plan, changing 9-9-9 to 9-0-9.

9 Miles on Foot per week - Grade: A. I did it! Walked 2 miles on Sunday. Trick or treated with an active group for two solid hours, which I estimate at 2 miles. Walked to dinner when working late Tuesday, 1 mile. Walked to my son's soccer game Saturday, taking the scenic route, 4 miles.

Have a great week everybody!

My son (#9) scored two goals on this beautiful November Saturday, a great reward after a long walk.

I'd say enjoy the vacation and simply be reasonable. Eat as if you were being filmed, knowing it would later be shown on national television.

How's that?

I'd second Big Clyde's suggestion -- and I love the thought about eating as if you were being filmed.

WAY back in 2006 when I first started losing weight, my family went on a cruise over Thanksgiving week. I ate at the breakfast buffet, watched my portions, and ended up managing to lose 8 pounds that week because I was running up and down the stairs on the ship!

It's doable :)

I have not been to an all inclusive resorty type place for a while, but, I am guessing there will be some good and healthy foods for you: like salad, fresh fruit, etc. What I usually do when I am on vacation is allow myself one item a day, or try to. I also bring some healthy snacks with me in my checked bags. Walk, walk and walk so more. That will help if you double tip in the dessert bar. And, I agree with the others, cut yourself some slack, not too much, and enjoy the togetherness event and not the food so much.

Great comments! I do like the "candid camera" idea. Have to get some steps in as well. Any more out there?

If it is a cruise, I try to eat in the restaurant and avoid the buffet. They have set meals that way. Taking in a early morning walk is always a good way to start your day. Take the stairs and not the elevator as much as you can. Another tip, if you are subjected to the buffet, tell yourself only one plate. Eat slowly - counting to 10 between bites - that way you fill up faster and you won't be tempted to go back for seconds.

Even though I haven't been on a cruise, I have heard that most of them have a workout room, some have pools plus the other suggestions of taking stairs etc. If you get your 9 fruits and veggies in place your 9 miles (or more) that week, you will help yourself balance the rest out.

I don't take vacations from working out. I make sure I work out. There is usually a way to figure it out.

I'm very interested in the answers to that question since I have my first cruise over Thanksgiving and I agree I'm a bit worried about the temptation. But, like Michelle points out there are likely to be plenty of healthy choices, we just have to make them. I'm traveling with some people that have yet to make any effort with their weight. I know that trying to give a good example will motivate me to choose wisely. Lovely pic! And great job for your kiddo!

Great job, Alan! Thanks for sharing the soccer picture. Go, #9!

Wow, I can't wait to read the cruise tips! The dessert buffet would be the toughest part for me.

I dont know you but I as moved by his blog and the motive behind it...I have struggled with emotional eating issues my whole life...I grew up poor so when I became independant I became a foodie....which wasnt a huge deal until a divorce a new marriage and my husband getting wounded in Iraq...for the past 7 years my weight has been a rollercoaster of downs and mostly ups....I have snce taken a nutrition class, began a program and a plan for healthier eating. I have been on a cruise and its a foodie's worst nightmare. My advice is to eat in the restaraunts on ship and avoid the buffets all together. It costs more but you can have them customize your food and you can ask them about what is in the foods, how they are cooked and if they are processed....the buffet is an open door for failure almost always. Steer clear of dessert all together and definately take advantage of walking the deck after meals....avoid alcohol as it contains more sugar than one person needs in a day and get some sun....if you eat your fruits and veggies first then your whole grains and save the meat till last you will feel fuller and eat less overall. Lots of water and use fruit as a dessert....have them add a lemon wedge to your water...makes the water more appealing. Wih you luck and hope you fully enjoy the experience on board. I really loved my cruise to Alaska....

It's funny you mention cruises...I was JUST talking to someone about this. I went on a cruise when I was 17. I was chubby and had food issues but I wasn't obese (yet).

Now, in my life as a healthy person I would probably never ever go on a cruise simply because of those damn buffets. The food on the cruise was good and it was SO tempting to just pile up the plate in the buffet line. And the scary thing is that the buffet was open all the time. So if I was bored in the middle of the day I could go and just eat dessert. That is so not a good environment for me!

Now when I go on vacation I know I will indulge in foods I don't normally eat but I balance it out with lots of physical activities. Hiking, biking, exercising etc. It works for me.
